Sednaya Prison is a prison near Damascus in Syria. The prison holds around 4,000 prisoners, most of whom are said to be Islamists and Muslim Brothers. After protests by detainees in 2008, several prisoners were killed. After renewed protest at the prison in July 2008, hundreds of detainees were injured and dozens of Islamist prisoners were killed. After several months of protests in 2011, many prisoners managed to escape.Zahran Alloush, Hassan Aboud and Ahmed Abu Issa were some of the more prominent prisoners released from the prison. They proceeded to form their own Islamist groups and take up arms against the regime upon their release.
